Innovation in Automotive Training

The type of work that automotive tradespeople do is being transformed. The development and expansion of electric vehicle sales have driven a need for new skills and expertise in automotive repair and maintenance. 

 

Automotive Industries Association of Canada and St. Lawrence College have joined forces to offer two FREE training programs to form new expertise and skills in the auto care industry.

 

The Career Exploration Program consists of a pre-apprenticeship exploratory experience for automotive industry job seekers. Participants may be eligible for supports like work boots, basic tools, safety equipment, reference books, etc. as well as transportation assistance.

 

The Electric Vehicle (EV) Training Program is an upskilling course allowing current automotive industry tradespeople to develop maintenance and repair skills relating to EVs.

What topics will be covered in these programs?

  • Safety
  • State of the art tools and use
  • Diagnostic trouble codes
  • Electric motor controls
  • High Voltage battery introduction
  • Autonomous Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)

Electric Vehicle (EV) Training Program

This program consists of theoretical and hands-on training lead by St. Lawrence College instructors for 8 full-day modules. 

The EV training program openings for current technicians and apprentices have been filled. Future delivery dates and locations are pending.

Career Exploration Program

This program consists of in-person theoretical and hands-on training lead by St. Lawrence College instructors for 2-3 days a week. 

The Career exploration program openings have been filled and waitlisted. Future delivery dates and locations are pending.

Am I eligible for one of these trainings?​

You are eligible for the Career Exploration training program if you are: 

  • 18 years of age or older;
  • a Canadian citizen, Permanent resident or awaiting Permanent resident status;
  • unemployed or underemployed;
  • not in school;
  • interested in a career in automotive trades;
  • a resident of Ontario.

You are eligible for the EV Upskilling training program if you are:

  • 18 years of age or older;
  • a Canadian citizen, Permanent resident or awaiting Permanent resident status;
  • not in school;
  • currently employed in the automotive industry;
  • a resident of Ontario.
